Chapter 9

Some weeks passed, and before I knew it October was coming to an end. I was still busy at the restaurant, and still trying to fit in all the time with Ava that I could. She was mostly wrapping up her work year, with Halloween being the end of her busy season. After the families came and went from the pumpkin patch, Kloser Farms would wind down for the rest of year, with only a handful vegetables left to be harvested. Rutabagas and parsnips and carrots, some greens like kale, collards, and chard. Ava used the winter season for planning the next season, and for personal projects. For me, not much looked like it would change.

At the restaurant, we lost both Katie and Harold. Katie had been angling for a promotion that we couldn’t give her, so she moved down state for culinary school. Harold, too, was looking for a promotion and got in at the resort just outside of town. It was a lateral move for him, but he thought there would be more opportunity there for him. Even though we were a tourist town with some great restaurants, at the end of the day it was a small town and cooks bounced between jobs all the time. It was sad to lose the two of them, because I thought we had a good team going, but people have to look out for themselves.

PJ and I picked up a lot of the slack at the restaurant, and Alejandro got bumped up to working on the line. We also brought in a new cook, an older guy named Todd who looked like he had seen a lot of shit. He wasn’t the most friendly, but he did a good job. We all pitched in for prep work as we hunted for hours after tourist season. But the vibe in the kitchen had changed, and along with the incoming cold weather and the decreasing daylight, I was starting to feel depressed about my job at the Local.

It was near the end of service on a Friday night, and I stepped out of the kitchen into the dining room to see where we were at. There were a few tables with customers still seated, a couple servers moving around to straighten things up as the night came to a close. Behind the bar was Cara, the bartender, and Lauren, one of our front-of-house managers. Together they were slowly cleaning the station while they chatted. I sauntered over toward them and stepped behind the bar.

“Hey Kimmy,” said Lauren.

“Hey,” I replied. “Slow night, huh?”

“Yeah. Weird for a Friday.”

“It looks like you guys up here are planning to get out quick.”

“That’s the plan,” Lauren confirmed. “I think everyone’s a little bummed it was so slow and just wants the night to be over.”

“Right,” I agreed. I pushed my hands into my pockets and leaned on the bar. “Hopefully it’s just a fluke and tomorrow’s better.”

“Did you see the reservations for tomorrow?” Lauren asked. “Not much better than today.
